People get spiritism confused with true spiritualism. True spiritualism is not "conjuring the dead" as is spiritism. True spiritualism involves many things, to include the most widely known ability to see, hear and communicate with ghosts, but it is far from calling up the dead for any reason whatsoever.
Calling up the dead is what is known as "spiritism", and it is nothing to be played around with. It is dangerous. There are many, many types of spirit personalities in the spirit world who will try to contact you if you dabble in conjuring the dead. When you practise spiritism, you are opening yourself up to all spirit personalities. For example: instead of calling up the spirit of your loved one, a demonic personality will most likely be the one to answer your call! If you are alarmed to hear this, you should be! Even if you should get the person you are asking to speak to, it is never a good thing. GOD considers this a very serious matter and you bring a curse upon yourself if you practise this. (See I Samuel, Chapter 28)
True spiritualism is not conjuring or calling up the dead, or even asking the dead for help. Spiritualism does involve the communication between the living and the dead, or even spirit personalities who have never lived as humans upon the earth, such as angels and the Holy Spirit. However, with spiritualism, the person is the one being contacted by those in the spirit world for a reason or purpose that is not based upon the personal desires of the person being contacted.
Special Note: Praying to GOD is calling on a spirit personality, but it does not involve conjuring up the dead. Therefore, prayer to GOD is neither spiritism or spiritualism. You should never try to contact an angel or any other saint for help. That is also spiritism! In that instance, you open yourself up to demonic forces that will be more than happy to oblige you. You should only pray to GOD through Jesus Christ.
To clarify the role of a medium as it relates to spiritism v. spiritualism is as follows:
In both spiritism and spiritualism, a medium is a person through which a spiritual personality speaks. A medium may simply relay the message or messages they hear to the person or persons to which they are addressed, or the medium can allow the spirit personality to share their space and speak directly to the person or persons they wish to communicate with. The difference between a medium practising spiritism v. spiritualism is that the medium involved in spiritism contacts spiritual personalities with intent to receive and deliver messages. A medium involved in spiritualism only receives and delivers messages as they come to them from the spirit world.
Bottom line: A spiritist medium contacts the dead for whatever purpose they desire and receives and gives messages from the spirit personalities to others. (Reminder: This is a dangerous activity!)
A spiritualist medium is someone who RECEIVES messages from those in the spirit world and relates them to others as needed for a purpose that is not initiated by the spiritualist medium.
